Cardboard 'load spreader' placed across face of instrument, in contact with front of rack handles. Permitting this cardboard to extend past the instrument sides is the reason that the side filler pieces were cut to the same length as the instrument.
In this case, these pieces of cardboard came from the box itself. The flaps will overlap when the box is shortened; when taping the bottom I left the 'inner' ones at full length and allowed them to overlap, but cut the 'outer' ones where they overlapped at the centerline of the carton. This gave me two pieces of cardboard about 9" long (the amount the box was shortened) and the width of the carton. Each was cut down the center to give a pair of long pieces about 4-1/2" wide that were then used as shown, one set for each of the two instruments. They were shortened as needed to fit between the foam sides.
